About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Adrienne, Good point about trust and rapport. If we can earn the respect of our students by being professional and prepared we then can develop rapport with them as the course progresses. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Robin, Well said. We are the connection between our content and our students success. If we don't bring excitement and engagement to our classes our students will not focus on the course content as they should. As a result we will not have fulfilled our professional obligation as educators. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Adrienne, Right you are about our attitude influencing the attitudes of our students. We need to bring our A game to the classroom each time we enter it, no matter what has happened prior to the class. If we aren't excited then for sure our students won't be either. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
MARISSA, We need to bring enthusiasm about teaching and passion about our content. When we do we will have our students engaged and focused on what we are sharing with them. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
David, This is a good way to approach the learning of your students. You are helping to instill a love of learning in them that will go well beyond the classroom. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
David, This is so important to their future. You are helping your students with their careers as a result of this effort. Keep up the good work. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
MARISSA, Early and frequent successes in the course are important for adults to have as they get settled into being students once again. Your comments about how to help them see themselves as successful students are right on target. Once they have gotten over their fear they will be able to move through the course and toward their career goals. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Robin, Thank you for these good comments about adult learners and their success potential. Adult learners need early success in a course so they can internalize that they in fact can do well in the course. These early success points will build their confidence levels and before long they will be making progress not only in the course but in their career development as well. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Ana, Learners like variety and change of pace. The more you can use either or both the more engaged your students are going to be. In addition, just as you mention you will be appealing to the different learning preferences represented in your students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
John, This form of instruction is very supportive of the different learning preferences of students. The more you can involve multiple forms of sensory input the greater the content retention is going to be in the working memories of students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
