About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Gloria, I use pretesting in my courses for the same reason you mention. I need to find a baseline on my incoming students so I can adjust my instructional delivery to meet their needs. I think it helps in getting the students engaged quicker because they can see where they need to increase their knowledge and skill base. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Nicole, Offering variety and change of pace in your delivery will help students of all different learning preferences to become engaged. The key is effectively communicating your content in a way that helps students to see the value of it. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Tim, Well said. They need to be reminded over and over again of the end results. They have to see their future and when they do their motivation increases because they remember why they came to school in the first place. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Gayle, Your ongoing experience in the field is so valuable for your students. You are bringing your most recent experiences to class and letting them know how the real world operates. This increases their engagement as well as helps to make your content even more real to them. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Gayle, You make a number of good points about how we mentally need to come prepared to class. Yes, we do get tired just as our students but need to strive to keep the energy level up because if we don't it won't be long before everyone is just going through the motions in class. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Roxzelda, Good reminder because if we aren't excited about what we are teaching it is for sure the students won't be either. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Tim, Using a quote of the day is a good way to start a class and get the students thinking about what they have just heard. You are warming them up and getting them ready for the class that is to come. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
John, Right you are. If we don't bring passion for our field and excitement about getting to teach it it is for sure the students aren't going to be excited. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Camille, Little things like this make a difference in perception by students. They start to see the professional concern you have for their success and this helps to get them engaged. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Eric, They really help to seal the deal in terms of relevancy and application. They help to make the content come alive for the students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
