About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Alan, You hit upon two key words that help to engage students. Passion for one's field and enthusiasm for teaching content is the combination needed to "sell" the course to the students. You are impacting the lives and future of your students with this approach and I wish you continued teaching success. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Diana, These are the moments we live for. I get so excited when I see they are "getting it" and I know I am impacting their career development. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.

Kevin, You got that right. All of my students have "skin in the game" because they have chosen to enroll in college and pay tuition to attend but they often don't see it in such light. The problem is that they often forget that it is their future that they are creating. We instructors have already graduated and are or have been in our field. We are there to help them be successful but they must put forth the time and effort needed to be successful and if they don't they are going to be out of the game very… >>>

Kevin, Right you are. It is fun to see them develop their critical thinking skills and realize that they in fact can be problem solvers if they use their common sense and a sequence of thought. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Mitchell, The more you get to know about your students the more accurately you will be able to target your instruction. In addition, the more you know about your students the more you will get to enjoy your relationships with them and this is one of the rewards of teaching. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jeremy, Good point about motivation. The more we know about our students the more accurately we can target our motivational efforts. For some students that are facing massive life challenges a friendly word and kind greeting are enough to get them excited about that day's class and forget for a while what faces them at home. John, What are some ways you incorporate student feedback to make your class better? Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Discussion Comment

Jeremy, I agree and I ask for student feedback on a regular basis in my courses. After a quiz or project I give each student a 3X5 card and have him or her give me feedback about the value of how I tested them or the value of the project. Also, I ask for recommendations for improving the quiz or assignment. I always get good feedback and I have never had a student vent while writing feedback. They don't sign their names because it is my feedback not theirs so I want them to be candid and they are. I… >>>

Julian, Great news about the value you got from ED 102. I am excited for you and your teaching efforts for next term. Enjoy your teaching and your students! Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Alan, Your last sentence puts it in perspective. You are the learning leader and as a result need to provide leadership while bringing your human side into the mix. Knowing they can talk with you and you will listen is a valuable resource for them to know they have available. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
