About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Lori, Good point about showing students your human side from the beginning of class. This is a very important part of being an engaging and effective instructor. This helps you to earn the respect of your students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Adam, Like your list of different instructional deliveries. These will appeal to the different learning preferences you have in your classes and will help to keep your students engaged. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Morgan, I agree. The more interaction the higher the retention of content because they see how it can be applied. This makes it real for them. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jocelyn, Good way to help them finish their courses and get ready for the big transition to the work world. You are helping them to get ready and move toward their career goals. What a great time to have them in their educational journey. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Leslie, How do you share this information with your students? Through handouts, discussion, Q&A? What has been the most successful for you? Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Adam, The sharing of the grading rubric is valuable to the students because they can see how and where they will be evaluated. This is important for them to know from the beginning of the class as it helps them to reduce their anxiety about the course and focus on being successful. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Lori, Well said in relation to the importance of the first day of class and how students perceive you as the learning leader. This is a critical time to establish yourself for the reasons you list. Thank you. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Todd, Good point and one that should not be overlooked by instructors as they plan for their first day of class. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jessica, Good way to learn about your students and get a feel for the composition of that group of new students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
David, Thank you for these comments as you have taken the value of a well prepared syllabus beyond just a document but have explained it as being an instructional development tool as well. This greatly increases the connection between content and application for students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
