About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Desmomd, Right you are about the influence the environment has on the learning of students. I use a horse shoe seating arrangement for the reason you mention. Each student is on the front row and as a result I have increased participation by everyone. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Cristiane, You have good insight about how to continue your professional development in all areas of instructional planning and delivery. You are right certain content remains the same but the delivery can be enhanced or changed to increase the engagement of students. With engaged students retention is increased and everyone becomes the better for their effort. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Tyrella, What are some ways you have found that help you to stay current with your knowledge? Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Mariesol, Having passion for your field is such an important part of successful teaching. The other is enthusiasm for sharing your content. Combine the two and you have a winner for everyone. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Joslyn, I think this is a very good idea because they get to see their futures in that setting. This should motivate them to get their work done and courses completed so they can get to clinic and start sharing their expertise. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Stacy, I think this is such a motivator for students. They get to see the value of the content they are being taught and how it will be applied to their careers. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Janis, You are right about many students never having seen a professional in their field so they are not sure what the expectations are. So by being a role model and setting the standards for the course you showing them where they need to take their development. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Amanda, You have expressed a well developed rationale for making sure we model the behavior and professionalism related to our field. Our students need to see how professionals in their field conduct themselves so the know how to develop themselves for career success. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.

Lisa, Seeing the learning environment through the eyes of the students is important. We are professional educators so we need to work in a professional environment which is our classrooms and labs. Sometimes we have to teach in less that desirable settings and students will understand and cope with it for a while but the college administration should move to get the best equipment and have it available in a supportive learning environment. Our students are paying good money to receive good educations and the learning environment is a major part of their educational experience. Thanks for the good comments.… >>>

Lisa, Preparation is essential as we know but the preparation needs to not only focus on specific content but examples, case studies and other strategies for reinforcing the content. With this type of planning instructors will be able to engage their students throughout each class session. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
