About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

John, Well said. It is always easier to build on positive rather than trying to dig out of negative. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
John, You make a good point and one that we instructors need to keep in mind as we plan our instruction. There need to be many opportunities for students to be able to apply the information they are learning. This increases the relevancy factor for them. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Sherri, Glad to hear that these types of classes are of help to you and your professional development. This is our mission. Observing colleagues is a great way to get ideas about how to expand your own instructional delivery options plus you will be able to ask these individuals about specific aspects of instructional development. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
John, The teaching by walking about model is a good one for you to continue. This offers you repeated opportunities for individual interaction with students as they are working through class topics. You desire to use more visuals in the future is a good effort to undertake as the more senses you can use in delivering your content the engaged your students will be. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Gayle, Right you are. Once the reason for the situation or problem is understood then proposed solutions can start to be developed leading to a solved problem. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Carl, Thank you for these very well crafted words on using multiple intelligences, critical thinking and problem solving. All are essential elements needed for learning as well as career success. The more expertise and experience students have in them the better prepared they will be when they enter their career field. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Ann, Great job of making your content "real" for students. The more application they can make the relevancy they will see. As a result their motivation levels will increase because they will get excited about getting through school and out in the field practicing their profession. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Terie, I think you have a very good approach to a course that many students perceive as not having the value of courses in their field. The more you can demonstrate to them, like the videos how effective communication can assist them in their career development the more value they will see in what you are offering. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Patricia, This point needs to be made over and over. Immediate feedback as the instructor defines it is so important for keeping the interest of students. By knowing with a short turn around how they did on a project or quiz students can make sure they make any adjustments needed to be able to proceed successfully in the course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Mary, Students as you know love hearing stories from the field. The stories help the students to connect with the content being shared and increases their perception of the value of it as well. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
