Donna, This is a good way to increase the personal investment by students in their futures. The more they see themselves being successful by learning the information in your course the more investment they will make in their learning efforts. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Amber, You are doing a great service for your students by helping to reduce their fears about their success in the class. By seeing and hearing the expectations of the class they can start to see that they in fact can be successful if they are willing to put forth the needed effort. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
John, I agree with your statement about the value gained from spending time reviewing the syllabus. By doing so you reduce many of the repetitive questions asked by students concerning due dates, projects, etc.. This type of information is covered in the syllabus and then can be reviewed by you in your syllabus session. This method helps the students to get a picture of the class requirements and expectations. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
John, All good strategies to help students see the value you place on them and the content you are going to be sharing. This sets the tone for the upcoming class sessions and gets the students engaged right from the beginning. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
John, The more students know about you and you them the more common ground you can find upon which to build a learning relationship. Your method allows for the exchange of a lot of good information and as a result you all start to get comfortable with each other from the very first meeting. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Michael, You are very fortunate to be in such a setting. I can tell you appreciate what your institution is doing to help you become and even more effective instructor. Keep growing in your knowledge and expertise because this will help you to enjoy teaching even more. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Bethany, The more connections you make between the course content and the application of the content to the real world the more value they associate with the course. Relevancy is important for students to see and understand as they move through the course sessions. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Lloyd, Reasoning is essential as you mention. The more students gain skill in being able to think critically and solve problems the more value they start to associate with reasoning. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
