About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Laura, Good point about the learning environment. We need to look at it through the eyes of our students so we can make any needed adjustments to enable them to stay focused on their purpose for being there and that is learning. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Laura, Good ideas for expanding your knowledge and expertise as a communicator and education. Keep up the good effort. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Katherine, Great to hear the value you got from the information. I wish you much success as you work in the REFOCUS effort in your course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Katherine, I am a big fan of using case studies because they let students make application of their new knowledge and show them relevancy to what is being taught. In addition case studies help to expand the problem solving skills of students so they will be more confident when they step into their work roles. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Katherine, Sad when you hear about such teachers. These experiences should make us educators dedicate ourselves not to be like some of the less than professional teachers we have had. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Katherine, I love hearing stories like this because it reinforces how much impact instructors have on the lives of their students. Your science teacher continues to impact your life years later. He helped you to make a career choice of being a teacher in the his and now your field, science. We need to remember our influence as we work with our students and help them move toward their career goals. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
John, Right you are. You cannot have too much preparation when it comes to instructional planning. All of this effort really pays off when you conclude a class and you know you have really reached your students and they "got it". Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
John, Great approach. In addition, with this method you are appealing to the different learning preferences of your students and this helps to keep the focused on the content that is being delivered. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
John, You mention two important words when it comes to student engagement. Relevant and current. By making sure your content and activities incorporate both of these elements you are increasing the interest of your students and as a result their retention of content is going to greatly increase. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Gretchen, Great resources for getting your students involved in the application process. I use case studies a lot in my field and you are doing such with your cybercrimes instruction. Letting them work through different scenarios as you mention gives them knowledge and expertise that will serve them well when they are in the field. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
