About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Wendy, I use guest speakers a lot in my classes for the reason you state. Students get excited hearing from someone in the field. They start to see themselves in that role and this increases their motivation. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Regina, Thank you for sharing this method of getting input from all students, even the more shy ones. It is important to hear from everyone throughout the course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Wendy, This is when that instructor needs to leave teaching or do something to regain the enthusiasm he or she once had. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Kevin, Good point and one to remember as we start a new class. We need to give respect and earn their in return. This is the foundation for the development of rapport. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Wendy, So true and so important. If you have passion for your field and are excited about sharing it then students think that maybe they need to be excited as well because there is value to what is being said. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Antonio, Stories like those you share from the field are extremely valuable in showing your students the value of the content being shared. They also increase their motivation about being successful. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Kevin, Enthusiasm sells. So does passion for one;s field. Bring both to class and you have some egaged students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Antonio, Well said because I think the students need to be able to articulate their reasons for enrolling. If they can't then it will be hard for them to see the end results. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Thomas, This is a very good point. Knowing the "why" helps to set the goal for each student. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Tracey, This is a good point and reminds me of the question, "How to you eat an elephant?" Answer: "One bite at a time." The point being students can become overwhelmed with content at times. So by breaking it down as you are you are helping them see smaller units and how these units become the total later on. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
