Activity

Gloria, You are making it personal and that is what learning should be about. The more you can get them to think about their own experiences the more connections they will make with what is being taught. Thanks for sharing this strategy with us. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jason, I use case studies a lot in my classes as well. They really help the students with their critical thinking skills which is what they will need to be able to do when they are in the field. Keep up the good work and keep sharing those case studies. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Glenn, Good for you about not assuming your students have read and understanding the course expectations. This way by reviewing them everyone will be on the same page from the first class meeting forward. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jason, This is something that is important to establish from day one. They need to know your expectations and that you will be enforcing on a consistent bases your class policies. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jaime, All good points about how a student needs to see his or her instructor. This forms the foundation for the development of respect and rapport. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Djuna, This is so important for older students. They have a lot of fears that the younger students don't have and most of their fears revolve around their being able to do the work and use the technology. If you can set their minds at ease in these areas and show them how they can be successful they wills settle into the course and do well. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Lori, Good point and one that brings even more pressure to you. You are setting the standard for your instructors as well as your profession so you want to always be a the top of your game in relation to the impression you make. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Kulsoom, Building on a positive first impression is a great way to start a new class. Digging out of a negative hole is a tough way to maintain control of the class. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Mary, Right you are about the value of introductions. I always enjoy the first meeting of a new class because of what I learn about my students. I am amazed each time I start a new course in terms of who I have enrolled and the experiences they have had. I learn so much from them. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Michelle, This is what personalizing instruction should be about. The more you know about them the more accurate you can be in your instructional planning. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
