About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Roger, Good strategy to follow because you are helping them to see the value of the knowledge and skills they are working to acquire. By sharing so of these positive opportunities with them you generate excitement and get them ramped up for their own successes. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
James, Making the connections between the classroom and labs and the real world is an ongoing process for sure. The more frequently we can do this the more value our students will get from our courses. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Marilyn, Yes, they can. Sometimes they have problems in making the connection between what they are studying and how it will apply to their careers. We need to help them make such connections on a regular basis. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Tom, This was my experience as well. My masters gave me information and application opportunities daily since I was working in the field just as you mentioned. I did a tremendous amount of growing in my field during my masters as a result of the connection between my course work and my career. Good point, thanks for making it. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Lauren, You are connecting the dots between course content and career development with your students. This is an important factor to consider as you provide feedback and course content. There has to be relevancy and application if the students are going to see value in the course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Tom, Feedback is a very valuable growth tool for us all. We need to help our students as much as we can with their growth through concise and frequent feedback. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Lynne, You are practicing a host of instructional strategies that are very beneficial to your students. Each strategy gives them opportunity for personal growth and development in the course and their career. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Patricia, This is how students learn. Take the answer right or wrong and build on it with additional examples and information. Your point is a good one and we need to remember it when interacting with our students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Marilyn, Good strategies to follow as you engage students in interactive discussions and topics. The more they contribute the more valued they will perceive themselves as being. This is an important growth point for them in the course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Discussion Comment
Gretchen, First let me tell you, "yes there are such students out there". We can't let them get us down because no matter what we do they will not be happy. They don't want to be there or they are just negative people. You did the right thing and concentrated on the learning you saw with your engaged class and that helped to keep your spirits high. Enjoy your teaching and interaction with your positive students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
