About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Robert, The more we can create a simulated work environment the better for our students. As you know from you own experience a simulated work experience engages students at a higher level plus eases their transition from school to the workplace. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Katina, Thank you for making this important point. We educators need to be clear and concise in communicating our expectations. By doing so we will set the students at ease in relation to understanding what is going to occur in the class and what the workload is going to be for student success. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Brenda, This is like an instructional style "buffet". You have such diverse experiences in your background so you can chose many different role models and examples from which to develop our own style. Keep up the good work and I wish you much success as an educator. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Robert, Good way to grow and expand your professional expertise. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jill, I think you are on the right track with your approach because you are showing them multiple examples of how to develop and use their communication skills. In the past I have even used role playing in class do illustrate how skill in research writing can be of benefit to the career development of dental assistants. We have had some fun with researching and taking technical terms and explaining them in alternative ways to other students that play the role of patients. This becomes a game and it increases the engagement of students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Gary, These stories and examples increase the value of the content being covered. They show both application and relevance to what is being studied and this increases the ROI for students. Keep up the good job you are doing in sharing your own work experiences. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.

Dave, Have a back up activity of some type to use when you need to catch your thoughts. I have a number of case studies that I bring to class and can hand out when I need to get my students to thinking and problem solving. The case studies can range from easy to more difficult this way you will have them available no matter where you are in the course-beginning, middle or end. Also, I have questions listed that I can use to start class discussions. You will be ready to go again once you have worked through one… >>>

Russell, I use a lot of case studies in my classes to get my students involved in the asking of questions and proposing of solutions. The more experience they have in these areas the better prepared they are going to be out in the work place. Thank you for making these good points. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Teresa, Reflective thinking is a powerful tool when used to establish a foundation from which possible solutions can be created. It needs to be developed and used prior to moving forward in the problem solving process. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Russell, Right on target. Talking the talk is nothing like walking the walk. No performance, no results, no job. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
