About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Krista, Like your list. It really zeros in on the needs of the students and gives a human perspective to how you are there to help them be successful if they are willing to put forth the effort. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Roark, These are really valuable for course improvement. I do them throughout the course so I can make adjustments as needed and keep my course on target. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Dave, I wish you continued success with the list. I still use one to make sure I like you don't miss a critical item and short change my students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Maria, You make a good point about reinforcing your expectations the first few weeks of class. It is important to do this because many college students have "selective" memories when it comes to course details. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Laura, Good way to make clear what the expectations are for the course. This way the students will leave knowing how they can be successful in the course and then they can do their own planning on how to meet the course requirements. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Margaret, Good elements for an instructor to bring to the first class. You are demonstrating your human side this way and that helps to set the students at ease in the class. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
LYDIA, If you bring passion for your field and enthusiasm for teaching to the first class you will be setting the stage for a successful course to come. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Michael, Good strategy to follow. You know that you will always look professional when you do this. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Yi, Good point about having dropped classes because of a first impression of an instructor. I am sure you set the stage for a great first class and then build on that from there. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Bart, So true in terms of a needed first impression. It needs to be good supportive and comfortable. If it is then from there it is a building process of giving and earning the respect of students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
