About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Theresa, Field trips are great for the reason you list. I have my students out in the field observing and shadowing professionals in their field so they can make a connection between the courses they are taking and how the information they gain will be used in the workplace. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Heather, You are fortunate to be in a school like yours. Your administration values good instruction and is trying to provide you with the resources needed to be a high quality instructor. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Ashley, You are teaching such an important area and I commend you for your efforts in trying to make connections between your content and the different career fields of your students. Being an effective communicator is valued no matter what your field may be and our students need to see that as they are taking the English course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Stephen, This is such a great feeling as you mention. When students see other students learning they start to see the value of the learning community of which they are a part. This is when career growth becomes a reality for students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Donna, Positive reinforcement will keep the students focused on the learning process. The more they see success the more they will want to learn. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Katie, This is what instructional guidance should be about. You are letting them make the connection between the real world and the classroom. By them bringing in the samples they get to select this work by themselves and then can analyze it with the help of classmates and yourself for quality. The results of these exercises will help the students with their reflective thinking process. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Malana, This is such a good way to take an overview of the class and the learning needs of your students. You are exploring the different aspects of instructional delivery so everyone will have a chance to become engaged if they are willing to put forth the effort. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Malana, So true and so important for the students to observe as you start the new class. This way you are modeling for them how they need to create a positive first impression when they are entering the workplace. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Linda, Your point about the sense of sharing that comes from students telling something about themselves is very important because it helps give them an identity in the class. They see who their classmates are and how they have all had different experiences so they see that everyone including themselves can become part of the learning community. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Shirley, This is how it should be because as a result of how you have set up the learning experiences for your students you are helping them make the transition to the work world much easier. They will have the knowledge, skill and understanding of what it takes to work in a professional environment that requires that certain steps be followed. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
