About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Linda, Good approach to take because your movement helps to include every part of the room as well as the students in the learning process. This way no one gets left out. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Susan, Yes, they do because everyone is on the same page this way and know where they are heading. Reduces anxiety on the part of the students and reinforces that they are on target with their learning. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jodi, Instructors that "wing it" end up having challenges from their students. We do need to be prepared and ready to present our content with confidence. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Susan, Yes it will. This helps the students to see relevancy and application to what is being taught. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Clare, You have a very clear understanding of how to use the intelligences of your students as strengths. Like the way you balance your course out so that they learning preferences of your students are included at different times during the course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Andrea, You make a good point concerning the "bounce-back" factor. Students come to school with backgrounds and pressures that are hard to understand and yet they stick in school and graduate. I love going to these graduations because it keeps me focused on why I am a teacher. Seeing their families stand by them for photos puts into perspective how much influence we can have in helping them to overcome barriers and make them and their families proud. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jeanie, I am excited for you as you teach your next course. Sounds like you have a number of new activities and strategies you want to try. I know you are going to like the results you get. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Susan, I am sure this is a great time of discussion. By taking this approach you are showing both relevancy and application of your content to your students. They are seeing what they are learning come alive as a result of the articles being discussed and topics being covered. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Susan, I love the informal interaction I have with my students because I get to know them more as humans rather than just students. Also, these chats help to form the foundation for the development of rapport, not to mention they are just fun. My students seem to always have some experience or activity that amazes me and I get to learn about it. One of the reasons I love being a teacher. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
EDWARD, This is such a good point to remember as we work with students. The human factor is needed by instructors if they are going to earn the respect of their students and then develop rapport with them. We are there for them and in return we ask that they put forth the needed effort to learn the material or skills. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
