About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Arturo, You are providing a great resource to your students. These handouts lets the students review what has been covered and then take them home for review and study later. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jacquelin, This is a very important part of the learning process. Students can get caught up in meeting the course requirements and forget that they are actually learning a lot and making progress toward their career goals. They need to be reminded of this ever so often so they will be reinforced and get excited about the new knowledge and skills they have developed. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
matthew, Well said about the need for preparation and planning. This is what will bring success to the learning environment for students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
matthew, What are some ways you convey your enthusiasm for teaching your content? Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Karen, You are providing such valuable training to your student in this area. They need to see how what you are helping them with is going to be the core of their career success. Their lives are going to be spent in many situations solving problems. They need to be able to work with others to find viable solutions. If they can't they are not going to last long in the field. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Michael, This type of information sharing is critical. If students don't see the value that is coming from the content and how it can be applied then their motivation and interest is going to drain away. You have them engaged and motivated because you are sharing the relevance of the course on a regular basis. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Discussion Comment
Jacquelin, I use them a lot in my classes because I can do a quick class survey and get feedback without taking a lot of class time. I don't think end of course formal course evaluations provide the type of feedback I am looking for to improve my instructional delivery. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Michael, Something we need to work to overcome. Last session I taught 6 sections of the same course. I had to do a lot of planning to make sure I was enthusiastic and passionate about the content I was sharing in each of the classes I taught. Would have been easy to drop into a rut and just pound out the material. This would not have been fair to the students nor to my profession. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jeffrey, Having rapport with students is what keeps many of us coming back to the classroom or lab year after year. Having learners engaged at this level and knowing they are focused on helping themselves to move closer to their career goals makes for a positive and supportive learning environment and that is an environment we all like to work in. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Tri, As the learning leader we need to be able to get them engaged and help them to stay focused on what is being taught. With clear strategies that is possible and they can start to see the value of the content being offered. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
