About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Wendy, This timely response can be so valuable in keeping students engaged in the class. They know they are being respected for their input and valued for their contributions. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Michael, Good strategies that all instructors should use. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Kristine, Student feedback is the essence of instructional improvement. I have my students fill out 3X5 cards when we complete an assignment, quiz or some other activity. This ongoing feedback helps me to refine my instructional delivery options to better meet their needs. I find this feedback more valuable than the end of the course evaluations because they are real time responses. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Wendy, Students like change of pace and variety in their instructional delivery. You are sharing the same message over and over but through different venues. This helps to keep the students engaged yet offers them the needed repetition. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
David, Are there some ways you can reinforce the key concepts when you do your big test review such as using small groups to share information, or games where students use the information to answer questions? Any type of activities that will get them to use the needed information over and over so it will be sealed in their memory for recall during test time. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
David, This is a great motivator I would think since your field has such a rich and interesting history to connect with and build upon. Knowing a part of such history should inspire students in terms of their contributions to the field as they create a future for themselves. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Steven, This is a comfortable and supportive way to open a new course. The students can get settled in, share a bit about themselves and learn more about you. Together you all have established a foundation from which respect can be earned and rapport developed. This is how a good course is created for all those involved. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Edda, There is a saying that fits this strategy and that is "To teach is to learn twice, one as a student and again as a teacher.". You are helping your students to process the information as students and then as teachers when they share with others and work at the board. Good plan! Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Ben, This wait time can be some of the most valuable time they invest in their career development. This is a good strategy to use with them and hopefully they will make it a part of their problem solving approach. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Patrick, Like your definition as it reflects the value of using one's intelligence in an applied and relevant way. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
