About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Cynthia, This is what sequential learning should be about. You are growing through confidence the abilities and knowledge of your students. At the end of the course I would guess they are amazed at how much they have learned in a short period of time. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Marcia, The more of these examples the better because you increase the value of the course content as a result of this sharing. You are showing relevance and application and this helps the students see the reason that certain content is being taught. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Joel, This is a great way to problem solve since it involves self discipline and reflective thinking. The more that this can be done the better one will become as a decision maker and problem solver. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Mark, Yes, it is. You last sentence is the end goal. The challenge is that many individuals can seem to get there. They use the "Ready, fire, aim" format when they make decisions or try to solve problems. By getting them to think and then act better decisions will be made and more problems solved. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Terrie, "War stories" are get in getting students to see the value of the course content. These stories help to make the content come alive and be relevant to their career growth. The more they can see that the more engaged they will be. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jeffery, This is why it is so important to "read" your students. As a result you can customize your instructional delivery in a way that will help them to become engaged and focused on the required course content and applications. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Terrie, Good list of strategies to use in getting students to retain the shared content. Through variety and reinforcement you will enhance their abilities to retain the required knowledge and information. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
William, I like this way of opening a class. It gets everyone relaxed and thinking about the quote that was shared and maybe even a joke so laughter has been shared as well. This is sets the stage for a good class to come. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
William, This is a key element of reading students. Knowing how they perceive the course based upon their life experiences helps you in providing support and reinforcement. This is how you will keep them engaged and moving forward in their learning. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Daniel, I like this approach myself because it lets them get settled in and learn about their classmates as well as the course requirements. Once settled then you can start the assignment of work and delivery of content and they will be ready for it. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
