I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Hi Vinita, Good strategies to keep your students engaged. Students really like guest speakers and field trips. They help to make what they are learning more real to them. Gary

Hi Masami, The early planning part can come at anytime depending on when you learn what course(s) you will be teaching. I have started a year before teaching a course as well as 24 hours when I got assigned a course over the weekend prior to the class starting. Ideally have a month to six weeks to plan out what you are going to do would be great. As for time that will depend on you and how your structure your course. Hi Rizalina, You are on the right instructional path with the variety of deliveries that you have planned. Keep up the good work and your students will be engaged in the course throughout the duration. Gary
Hi Rebekah, Good example of why concrete goals are so important. You can achieve a goal if you don't know what the goal is. Helping them define their goals is a part of being an educator, plus it is great to see when they are able to verbalize their goals. Gary
Hi All, Thank you all for the different ways of making your expectations clear to and for the students. By making the expectations clear you can reduce the frustrations and fears of students so they can focus on what they are going to be learning throughout the course. Gary
Hi Barbara, I like your approach because you set out clearly what the course polices, expectations and requirements are. This way the students know from the first day what they will be doing throughout the course and that they have your support to help them achieve success. Gary
Hi Rebekah, This is very important to do because it helps the students to "connect the dots" between what they are studying and how it is going to apply to their future careers. Gary
Hi Robert, This is very true. The good first impression sets the tone for upcoming course and serves as a reference point for the students. Gary
Hi All, Many of you have shared great strategies for encouraging and supporting your students. Thanks for these methods because I know they will benefit instructors looking for strategies they can use with their students. Gary
Hi Krista, This is so important. The students need to know that their instructor is there to help them be successful if they will put forth the effort. Success is catching so they need to be around those individuals that are striving to be successful instead as you mentioned hanging around those that would take them down. Gary
