About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Hi Clay, I do this as well and the results are great! I get to know the students better, get a feel for the mood of the class for that day and work on developing rapport with each student. Good to hear of your success with your students as well. Gary
Hi Ellen, So true! The students are going to have to do this if they are going to be successful in their careers so the more skill they can develop in problem solving the more valuable they are going to be as employees. Gary
Hi Sandra, This is a good way to keep your class current plus increase the interest in the content. When your students know you have brought in the latest about the field they know they are learning from someone who whats to share content that will help the move forward in their education. Gary
Hi Sandra, You are so right. Thank you for sharing this with us because new instructors need to realize how important having clear goals and objectives are to their teaching success. Gary
Hi Andrew, Great to hear about your teaching success. You are teaching a challenging course and you have found ways to keep the content interesting and methods for application. Keep up the good work you are on the right course. Gary

Hi Andrew, Is your course required or is it an elective? If it is a required course the students are putting the burden of learning on you. They have to have the content of the course to move forward in their career preparation. They really don't have a choice to be "not interested" in the subject. Explain that to them and then continue with the strategies they are using. They are going to have to shift their attitudes because many of us aren't interested in going to work either but we do because our bankers want their mortgage payment every… >>>

Hi Frank, The way you are connecting their life/work experiences with what they are learning does in deed show relevancy. In addition you are showing them how they can apply what they have done with what they are going to be doing so they don't become intimated by the course work. Gary
Hi Donald, Thank you for your comments about being an effective instructor. Even with a captive audience it isn't fun to teach students that aren't invested nor connected with the content. Keep up your good work and help make learning fun for your students, captive or not. Gary
Hi Julien, Good strategy for helping the students to "connect the dots" between the content and application. This is what makes the course relevant for them. Gary
Hi Julien, Right you are. Teaching is in fact life long learning because we instructors need to constantly be on the search for new material, content and methods so we can bring all of this to our students in an effective manner. Gary
