About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Hi Audrey, Good approach. This way you know you are current with your content and you can show your students how your class content will help them move forward in their education. This connection between the classroom and the real world helps to motivate them toward success and their career goals. Gary
Hi Tina, Right you are about the need to help students feel connected and accepted in the classroom. They are paying you a very nice complement when they ask you about your future teaching assignments. Great job! Gary
Hi Dr. Godwin, I think this is a effective way to use PPs as well. It is easy to get the slides overloaded with text so the students just turn off during class because they know they can look at the slide handouts later. Key points show them what you consider to be important and then you can share the content as you wish. This way you have connected with them both visually and graphically. Gary
Hi Dr. Godwin, What are some of the methods that have worked best for you in connecting the classroom content with the real world for your students? Thanks. Gary
Hi Lyana, Good point and so critical to getting the start of respect and rapport going. They start to see you both as an instructor and a human being. Gary
Hi Connie, I like this type of questioning and discussion. It really helps the students to analyze and come up with solutions to different situations. The Amber Alert idea is great because you get them to personalize it in the own lives and then discuss it. Gary
Hi Kathy, I believe the same as you in terms of the benefits of using the question and answer format. It helps you to see what the students know plus it gets them interacting with each other. Gary
Hi Scott, Thank you for these wonderful comments. You have given us all a mini-lesson on how to impress and influence the start of a successful class. Many new instructors are going to benefit from your timely advice. Gary
Hi Clay, Students really enjoy hearing personal stories about what their instructors experienced when they were in the field. This helps to make the content real because you used the same content to be successful in your career before becoming an instructor. Sometimes students don't realize that we all worked in our fields before we became instructors. That experience is what helped us to become instructors. Gary
Hi Clay, This is a great strategy because you are connect the dots for the students with both application and relevancy. By enabling the students to see both of these concepts in action they will be much further ahead in their career development. Gary
