I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Hi David, How do you show your students the results of a plan or task? Is it through discussion, visuals or questioning? Thanks in advance for your response. Gary
Hi Dolores, Good point about the value of being an instructor. When they compliment you by saying what you taught them was valuable and worthwhile then it makes coming to class that much more valuable. Gary
Hi Gabriel, Right you are about first impressions. This is why careful planning needs to be done to help make that first impression a positive one for everyone. Gary
Hi Susan, Congratulations on helping your students to see the relevancy and application of what they are learning through videos and your personal experiences. This makes it real for them and as you mention really increases their interest in the learning process. Gary
Hi Dynlene, Thank you for this great information on learning preferences and knowledge acquisition. This is why helping the students to "connect the dots" between content and application is so critical to the learning process. Gary
Hi Dolores, You make a good point about drawing out students. You are right about the fact that once they start contributing to the class they become more involved in future discussions. This really builds their self confidence. Gary
Hi Susan, I like your approach. You make it clear for them so they can't come back on you and say they were never informed. Also you have a way of keeping in contact with them if needed. This helps to keep them engaged and focused on the course. Gary
Hi Denice, Good way to reduce misunderstandings and to create a common knowledge base for the students on the course requirements. This enables you to move the course forward in a efficient manner. Gary
Hi Ron, This is very true. Students need to be held accountable for their absences so that they don't make a habit of missing because they know they will be given the information once they return. On the other hand life has a way of disrupting the lives of students so they can't help being absent to deal with family situations, illness, etc. so knowing they will receive individual support to catch them us is of great value to them. Gary
Hi Shay, Your last sentence is the core of what educators are about. We are helping them to move along their educational journey and so we must strive to work our hardest to make sure we are well prepared, current in content and competent in delivery if we are to be able to guide them appropriately. Gary
