About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Hi Robin, Thank you for these comments about how to be an effective and professional instructor. These are key points that instructors need to consider if they are going to have maximum impact on the learning of their students. Gary
Hi Milton, Thanks for sharing your approach for teaching math. I wish I had had you as instructor back in my college days. I would not have been so scared nor stressed out because of your methods. You are helping many students succeed that normally would not be as successful due to their fear of math and lack of understanding about how to acquire math skills. Gary
Hi Laura, Good plan for creating instructional delivery alternatives that will enable you to attract and hold the attention of your students. Students need variety and you are offering that to them with your methods and as a result they will stay engaged in the learning process for longer periods of time. Gary
Hi Tina, Sounds like you had a positive experience as a new instructor. You did the right thing from the beginning and that was to earn the respect of your students. With respect comes rapport and with rapport comes an educational environment within which everyone can prosper. Gary
Hi Barbara, Good strategy for keeping the excitement level high for the entire course. We need to keep this in mind as we wear down and see our students start to fade. They will only be as enthusiastic as we are. Gary
Hi Idi, Well said and dead on. To do less than be prepared is to not be professional as an educator. Gary
Hi Geralyn, Keep up your efforts because they are having an impact on your students, even those who appear not to be a home. These students have the light come on at times within the course and they have "ah-ha" moments and it is at this time you see the value of your efforts. Gary
Hi Samer, Good points about how the term relevance is used within and outside of the class setting. The students have to internalize the value of their instruction and then apply it if it is going to have relevance to their future and success. This is one of the ongoing efforts we instructors need to attend to throughout our teaching process. Gary
Hi Angelique, This is a great way to increase interest and give the students some very practical experiences. Plus, I would guess your dog really enjoys the attention so it is a win win for everyone. Thanks for sharing this with us. Gary
