About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Hi Ray, Right you are. If you know someone cares about you and your success you will be motivated to perform at a level that brings success as well as self satisfaction. This is a message our students need to get. Gary
Hi Janet, So simple and yet so powerful. We need to always remember this when we are working with students. Share a little time with them and the results will be tremendous. Gary
Hi Janet, So true. I have a background like yours. My students were there because by law they had to be which is a different game than teaching adults. You are right on with your comments about how to engage adults and learn why they are there and what their expectations are. Gary
Hi Kessie, This is good advice for all instructors. The challenge is to do it with all the time commitments and responsibilities that come with teaching. We need to have professional development plans for ourselves so we make sure we continue to develop our skills just like our students. Gary
Hi John, You make a good point about needing to help students in both the concrete and abstract learning areas. The more we help our students develop their problem solving and critical thinking skills the more satisfaction they are going to have in their careers, especially in a creative area like culinary arts. Gary
Hi Shay, Good point about consequences. By having consequences and being consistent students will respect you as an instructor because they know you have their best interests at heart. Gary
Hi Roger, Good strategy for getting students involved and thinking from the very first day. Thanks for sharing it with us. Gary
Hi Patricia, I like your approach. It is like the old "What part of this don't you understand?" You have been clear and concise on expectations so your students know they have to focus and put forth the effort and they will be successful. Gary
Hi All, You all have shared a number of very good ideas for getting students engaged and focused on the course which leads to increased motivation. These strategies are going to be of help to a lot of instructors that are looking for ways to increase the motivation levels of their students. Gary
Hi All, Many of you have contributed great suggestions for how an instructor should approach the classroom with a professional touch. The key is that you represent yourself and your field in a professional way and with the listed suggestions from all of you I know it will happen. Gary
