About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Hi John, Good way to help everyone get settled into the course and feeling comfort. A smile or laugh really helps to set the stage for the upcoming class session. Gary
Hi Nastassia, By having some comfort and familiarity with the instructor students can get settled into the course more quickly. This is important to get the course and students off to a good start. Gary
Hi Dawn, Keep the growing process going. You are developing your skills and expertise in the area of instructional delivery. This will enhance student learning while helping you to have greater teaching success. This creates a win win situation for everyone. I wish you much success in your teaching efforts. Gary
Hi Debra, Good advice for all instructors about how to develop their syllabus. It does need to be clean and clear so the students will be able to grasp the key elements of what it takes to be successful in the course. I like and use grading rubrics as well. They inform the students exactly how they will be graded and help to make clear what they must do to be successful. Gary
Hi Joyce, Good point about modeling a professional attitude and demeanor when it comes to the nursing profession. This is so important if you are going to be able to overcome the burnout issues that are being shared by the practicing nurses. Gary
Hi Denise, You fortunate in deed to be teaching in such a setting. By having everyone on the same page the idea of modeling professional behavior can be seen throughout the campus and this is so important. Gary
Hi Edward, The role of the instructor as a model cannot be stated too much. It is critical to establish yourself as a model of what being a professional in your field is like as well as a professional educator. The combination of these two sets the stage for a successful student instructor relationship. Gary
Hi Nastassia, By being clear and concise in with your course expectations you really help to set the students at ease in the course. This way you can build on the first class meeting and you move to the next stages of the course. Gary
Hi Gail, After teaching for many years let me reassure you that you will get very good at picking up cues and clues from your students. You will be able to "read" the climate of classes very quickly. As you well know the class climate can change dramatically from one meeting to the next. By reading these changes you will be able to adapt your instruction and zero in on the learning needs of your students in a most effective and efficient way. Gary
Hi Raminder, Good professional development plan. These sharing opportunities help you to stay current but also build a excellent network of fellow educators that you can share with and learn from. Gary
