About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Hi Lawrence. Right right right! Old strategy still current and needed in learning. Gary
Hi Chhayaben, Good point about varying your instructional delivery. This is so important to keep students engaged and focused on the course content while making applications to their career growth. Gary
Hi Pam, This is a great example of making connections with students. You should feel honored and your comments tell me you do with the fact that your stories are well received by your students as well beneficial to their career growth. You are right about them seeing that dog or cat, just a different name. Our fields do repeat themselves in terms of cases, situation, patients, clients or students so the more examples we have to pull from the more expertise we bring to the situation. Gary
Hi Nancy, I support your sharing of your professionalism this way. Students sometimes forget that we are all professionals and we have extensive backgrounds and education in our fields. Reminding them of this and the fact that we are still professionals through our memberships in our professionals organizations is great way to model how they can move through their own careers. Gary
Hi Adrien, Good comments about setting the tone for the class. As you say it is so important for class management. Someone will be the class leader and it needs to be the instructor if the class is going to achieve the set goals and operate smoothly. Gary
Hi Stephanie, This is a good way to help students to get settled into the course and start to feel like they can be successful in the course. By doing something as simple as this exercise they can graphically see that they can succeed if they will keep their schooling high on their list of success efforts. Even thought the challenges will still be there they know they can overcome them if they will keep looking for steps through, under, around or over them. Gary
Hi Angela, Good approach to helping students develop what can be a life long skill in the development of personal growth following the man-fish theory. Life long learners are going to continue to grow and expand their knowledge base leaning to more satisfaction in all aspects of their lives. Gary
Hi Ashaa, You make a very important and critical point about helping students. They do need this type of instruction because as you say upon graduation the safety net has been removed. The more confidence, knowledge and skills we can help them achieve now the better prepared they will be upon graduation. Gary
Hi Shana, Good points and right on the target in terms of setting the tone for the course. We must present ourselves in a professional manner if we expect our students to respect us and want to engage in the learning process with us. Gary
Hi Donna, All good strategies. The use of your own experiences really helps with keeping the interest of students. Students like to hear stories from the field because it helps them to connect their own lives with the career they are about to enter. This helps greatly with motivation. Gary
