About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Hi Linda, Way to go in getting a class started off on the right foot. This way the students can get settled into the course and comfortable with what is going on. Gary
Hi Treshena, Right you are. My first room was that way and I thought I would not survive the course. I knew for sure some of my students would die due to the heat but they didn't. To this day when I see one of these students we laugh about that room. It has given us a common connecting point all these years. Gary
Hi Donna, I think you do to. This is why planning and preparation needs to be done to the point that you do enter the classroom confident in your ability to teach. Gary
Hi Edwardo, Right you are. When we see student success we know why we keep coming back to the classroom time after time. Gary
Hi Stephanie, I agree about the need for extensive planning. It is so much easier to plan when you are getting ready for the class rather than walking down the hall to enter the class. I have faculty members that are in the copy room 5 minutes before class running handouts so they will have something to teach from. I can't stand pressure like that nor is it professional. Gary
Hi Joan, You make a key point with your last sentence. The operating word is RESPECT. Once you have earned the respect of your students and shown them in respect in return you have a wonderful foundation from which to conduct the course. Gary

Hi Niles, You make a good point about feedback. It needs to be immediate and ongoing. It is also good if the feedback can be two way. The more we get feedback from students the more we can improve out courses. Gary
Hi Shaun, Good way to help your current students see their future. Sometimes they get bogged down in going to school and need someone like a successful graduate to remind them that they will soon be there if they put forth the effort. Gary
Hi Joan, Like the way you lay out the learning journey. It is a trek and the students need to understand that. Sometimes they want it to be time travel where they can jet to the future where they have all of the knowledge and skills they need. Our job is to introduce reality in learning so they will keep on the learning trek while gaining the expertise they need to be successful Gary
Hi Dawn, Go for it. Students really do like application of content. The more you can demonstrate application and relevancy the more engagement you will have. Gary
