About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Hi Mark, So true and so important. Your approach helps to make the classroom a learning site rather than just a meeting place. This helps the students to become comfortable and settled while preparing to learn. Gary
Hi Jennifer, Good point. Also, students need to learn to work in other formats as they will have to when they are in the work world so the more opportunities we give them to expand their learning expertise the greater service we are providing them. Gary
Hi Gina, It doesn't sound silly at all or at least not to me. I use the same game and my students really enjoy playing it. They like the competition plus the easy way they get to review the course content. Good learning experience for everyone. Gary
Hi Carla, This is always a great asset for the class. You can show the students both application and relevancy in the course which creates value for the students. Gary
Hi Gina, Right you are. What are some of the most effective ways you use to reach students through their different learning preferences? Thanks for your input on this. Gary
Hi William, Right you are. Student like routine but they also like variety. So instructors need to offer routine in terms of organization but variety in terms of delivery. This way as you mentioned the different learning preferences will be targeted and each student can feel comfortable working in his or her preference area at different times throughout the course. Gary
Hi Tasha, Good list! Thanks for sharing it with us. I know it will be of great help to instructors that are just starting their teaching careers and are looking for strategies they can use in their classes. Gary
Hi Marianne, Your comments made me smile. How many times have we heard that? No matter how careful and comprehensive we are in explaining our requirements there are always those students that immediately raise their hand and ask a question about what we have just covered. Patience is an important part of instruction, isn't it. Gary
Hi All, A has been mentioned by all of you a well prepared syllabus is a must. What are some of the challenges that you encounter as you complete syllabus development? Gary
Hi All, Thank you for all of the comments about how to define, reflect and practice instructional professionalism. Based upon the forum responses you all have a very clear picture of what a professional educator is. Keep this picture in your mind as you approach the classroom and I know you will enjoy teaching success. Gary
