About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Hi Tina, Good ideas for professional development. The more exposure you can get the more options you will have to chose from when selecting your instructional deliveries. It is very common for college instructors to set in on other instructor's classes. Just ask if it is ok with that instructor and you will be good to go. Gary
Discussion Comment
Hi Betty, This is so important. By using student feedback you can customize your courses as well as adapt them as needed. This creates a win win situation for everyone. Gary
Hi Paula, Good strategy. The time spent at the beginning will be well worth in as you build the knowledge base of your students. They will know what the expectations are and can create individual success plans for themselves as a result. Gary
Hi Mabel, Good point and one we all know but sometimes don't plan for. It is so much easier to build on that good first impression rather than spending time digging out of a hole of negative impressions. Gary
Hi John, Good point about the support system need. Students often don't know how to set one up or even what one is. Everyone needs some type of support system so helping them create one will encourage them toward retention and success. Gary
Hi Shiva, Good point and one instructors need to keep in mind when developing a syllabus. It needs to contain critical information but not look like a 1000 page book as a result. Clear concise information needs to be included and that's all. Gary
Hi Lashawnds, Good strategy. Students love to hear stories about the field because it helps them make the connection of the course content with their future. Keep the sharing process going and continue to make an impact. Gary
Hi Lashawnda, I commend you for your efforts in trying to impact the lives of your students. You are offering them an opportunity to create a future for themselves if they will put forth the effort. Keep up the good work even though it can be frustrating and challenging at times. I teach in a setting much like yours so I can really appreciate your comments. Gary
Hi Melanie, So important to present yourself this way. You are modeling the expectations of the field and yourself when you look and act like a professional. Gary
Hi Matt, So true and critical to both learning and teaching success. The human factor contributes to career success so we need to help students to understand the role it plays in their future by modeling with them while they are students. Gary
