About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Hi Karne, Your last sentence says it all. They really do. If we are not passionate about what we do and the fact that we get to help others achieve their career goals then we don't belong in the classroom. Gary
Hi Andrew, Thank you for the inspiring comments about how an instructor needs to come into the classroom/lab. You are right on with this approach. It is for sure if we don't bring high energy and excitement to the classroom the students sure aren't. Gary
Hi Renita, Good strategy because you are bringing real life issues into the classroom. You are right about how sometimes they are engaged and sometimes they aren't. Just try to concentrate on the times they are and enjoy being a teacher. This will really help when you hit a "dry spell" in the learning process. Gary
Discussion Comment
Hi Bronwen, Good way to make student feedback a part of the growth process. You are expanding your expertise as an instructor through listening to what your students are saying. This is a mark of a dedicated instructor. Keep up the good work. Gary
Hi Edward, Congratulations for being an author. I know this is going to be a very enjoyable experience for you as well as those that read your materials. Keep up the professional development as this will also keep up your excitement for teaching. Gary
Hi Angela, I experience this same culture each time I teach a class. I have to work very hard to sift their thinking to include effort and perseverance as a part of their thinking process. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Good point thanks for bringing it up. Gary
Hi Betsy, Good way to make something that is commonly perceived as being "dull" come alive. This is a for the students to become involved as they will be looking for current events or news they can bring into the class for discussion. Labor laws as we know are critical to know (you can get into trouble very quickly) but tough to communicate to the students without strategies like you are using. Gary
Hi Sean, I like your list. These three components are what it is all about in terms of being a professional educator of merit. Gary
Hi Marcia, Good professional development plan. You are expanding your knowledge base both in your field as well as an educator. This is going to benefit your students for years to come. Good luck with your studies for the CPC exam. Gary
Hi David, Right you are about the environment. It needs to be supportive, comfortable and enjoyable. Gary
