About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Hi Phil, Great list of how how to maintain and expand your professionalism. This is what being a dedicated educator is all about. Gary
Hi James, This is an excellent model to follow. You are constantly reinforcing to the students what a person in their career field should be like. The use of professionals from the outside is always good because the students can see it isn't just your opinion but is the way the field operates. Gary
Hi Phuong, So true. They get to make application of their newly acquired knowledge and as a result they retain the content at a much higher level. Gary
Hi Tammy, Good point about the need for students to find themselves within their career field. There are some many different ways they can take a career and the instructor can be of a great help in helping them to make that meaningful and realistic choice. Gary
Hi Robert, This is a good point and I appreciate you making it. The instructor sets the tone for the class and the students move toward that tone or attitude. We have to bring our A game and enthusiasm to the class each time it meets. Gary
Hi Adrien, Good way to make your course have application and relevancy. Sometimes students get so caught up in it being a requirement and they forget it has value. I teach a required course and I have to make sure they understand that it is a requirement for a reason and I have to make that reason very clear to them. Gary
Hi George, Good strategies for reaching the different students you have in course. You are letting them know you understand them and that you have been where they are. They forget that we are all former students ourselves so we have an understanding of what they are going through as students. Gary
Hi Jennifer, You make a good point about how introductions set the stage for a positive class. By getting everyone comfortable with each other the students will be more engaged and ready to focus on the upcoming course. Gary
Hi Tiffany, Good point about the need for a positive first impression as a foundation for the development of respect. Through student respect comes the development of rapport which helps to keep the students engaged and focused on learning outcomes. Gary
Hi Mary Jane, By having them share their life experiences you are helping them to see both the application and relevancy of what you are offering in the course. They get to connect their life experiences with course content and thus the value of their learning greatly increases. Gary
