About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Jill, Good way to engage students and help them even for a brief time to focus on themselves and their futures. Life is waiting for them outside of the classroom but at least while they are in your class and working through this assignment they are able to graphically see what they are facing and can focus how to work through some of it. Gary
Ehab, I agree with you. The goals and objectives need to be clear and concise. This way they will be understood and worked toward by the students. Gary
Julio, Good strategy for helping your students to understand what you are trying to do in the class. The better prepared your syllabus is and the more they understand your goals and objectives the greater your connection is going to be with them and the content. Gary
Jeff, Great strategy! This is so important for students to understand. They need to see what the ROI for them is going to be at the conclusion of their schooling. By helping them see application and relevancy you are doing just that. Gary
Discussion Comment
Tanya, I agree with your comments. By soliciting feedback and then reflecting on it instructors can make adjustments in their instructional delivery that can benefit the learning of students. Gary
Tanya, I don't have any solution that will fix this situation, sad to say. Do all that you can do and if the student chooses to not participate then they have to live with that choice. When that happens I focus on my other students and try to encourage them all I can because they are motivated to achieve and I want to make sure I help them as much as I can. Gary
Shonna, A well balanced approach to delivering the different learning options. This way the students can work within their learning preferences for maximum learning. Gary
Diane, Students have a tendency to not listen as accurately as they should and/or dismiss the information they have been given in relation to assignments and due dates. As you say a well prepared syllabus eliminates that problem because the students have the syllabus in their hands and/or online. Gary
Kathryn, Good way to reinforce the progress that students are making. Sometimes they forget how far they have come unless they are reminded throughout the course. Gary
Michael, You make a good point about professionalism. Students may have acquired or at least observed behavior that was less than professional and so they see no problem with such behavior. The need to change that perception needs to be reinforced over and over, through not only words but also actions just as you say. Gary
