About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Pearlmarie, This is a very good way to offer instructional variety to your students while expanding their abilities to work in other areas of content input. This way they will be able to use their different learning preferences when they are out in the workplace. This is a win win for everyone. Gary
Marsha, I like this approach. The daily expectations strategy is a good one because each day the objectives are on the board and there for the students to see and work toward. Gary
Taylor, Good for you. The more you can make clear the course expectations, requirements and policies the easier it is going to be for your students to get settled into the course and get focused on the content. Gary
Ehtesham, Right you are. It is great when you can build on a positive first impression for the rest of the course. Gary

Pearlmarie, Actually I don't really worry about making a positive first impression on those students that miss the first day. I work hard to be prepared and make a positive first impression on the students that are there. When the students come in that miss the first class meeting I share the materials with them, explain how they can catch up and then move on. The reason for this is that I want the to see that the first class meeting is very important for them to be there. So when they ask "Did we do anything?" I can say… >>>

Taylor, It is the road map or maybe better yet the MapQuest for the course. It shows the students where they are going and how they are going to get there. Gary
Ehtesham, Right you are. Physically students have to be comfortable if they are going to be able to concentrate on what is being taught. Gary
James, Telling stories about your career experiences while you are sharing content is a part of your instructional style. So you are making the first steps in your developmental process. I wish you much success in your teaching career. Gary
Marsha, The more integration of different learning preferences that you can incorporate in the learning process the higher the content retention is going to be. You are right on target with the strategies you are using. Gary
Kathryn, Not only are you helping them become successful in the course you are providing opportunities for them to expand and/or develop their "soft skills". You are right these are the characteristics employers are looking for when hiring. Gary
