About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Antonio, Good point and good strategy. This helps to make the content real because it is about where they live. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Rochelle, Thank you for sharing this resource with us. It is a good one and can benefit instructors at all levels of experience. Your investment in the students is what is making the difference in their success I am sure. Keep up the good work. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
VALERIE, Good strategy. You are right about needing a positive first impression because 9 months is a long time to try to correct a negative one. I am sure your students really appreciate your concern and investment in their success at your college and in your course. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
J J, Good point. Respect and rapport are the two R's that need to be in every class. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Erik, I wish you continued teaching success. You are on the right track with your professional development. Gary Dr. Gary Meers

Sandy, Do you have to cover each PP slide in class. A suggestion I would make if for you to give out copies of the PPs in the form of 6 slides per page and lines on the right for notes. Then you could highlight the key concepts on certain slides and then go into the small group discussions just as you mention you are planning to do. The each small group could report out on their findings in the slides they were assigned. This way every slide will be covered but by different groups in different ways. I welcome… >>>

Brian, Your experiences and your professional attitude are both very powerful models for students to observe and follow. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
J J, Right you are. These organizations can help you stay current with your field as as well as instructional strategies. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Erik, Yes, it does. This is why we need to do all we can as we go into the classroom for the first time to be prepared to the best of our ability. Then we need to have an ongoing professional development plan in place throughout our teaching career. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Hannah, Follow up with students that are absent is very important. They need to know as you said that someone cares about them and their success. Knowing this keeps many students coming to class when they have major disruptions going on in their lives. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
