About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Beverly , Good method to follow. Students as you know really like stories, examples and applications of the content. The more we can do this the more value they associate with the content. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Michael, This is an ongoing challenge for such students. They need to see the value of acquiring the skills and knowledge necessary to pass Boards as well as be successful in the medical field. They can't have one without the other, even though they would be capable of performing the technical tasks. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Robert, I agree with your comments. Respect and rapport are the two R's of teaching success. Both contribute to success and satisfaction on the part of students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Camille, This is true and why it is so important to earn their respect and develop rapport with them. They need to see a connection between their instructor and their success. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Edward, Good strategy. The immediate use of newly acquired knowledge is so important for memory retention. The more application students can make the higher the retention is going to be. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Tiwauna, It sure does. Enthusiasm is catching just as is boredom. So we need to bring excitement to the classroom and passion for our field. This will help sell the content. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Robert, I agree with you about the rapport aspect of being effective as a professor. You have developed a refined method of reaching out and engaging your students in spite of not being on site. Thanks for sharing these strategies with us. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Harry, Try to create bridges between their language and life experiences to what is being covered in the class. As them to show you connections that they see. Also, when I have taught such classes I work with them to help me learn some new words in Spanish and then I try them out in class. Whether I get them right or not doesn't really matter to the students. We all have a good laugh, they correct me and we move forward because I was willing to try, just like what I am asking of them.
