About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Ezra, Your comments about the value of a well prepared syllabus is right on. The syllabus is the guide for the course and helps to answer questions and keep students informed as to where the course is going. They need this information from the very beginning of the course so they can do their own planning for course success. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Lauren, Good way to start the course out. This information also helps the students to get settled into the course and develop a feel for the expectations and rigor that is going to come in the next few weeks. As a result their anxiety is reduced. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Margeaux, I agree with you about the effect this approach can have on the learning by students. A class with good discussion and focused questions is a joy to teach because the students are "getting it" and are ready to absorb the knowledge they need to take from the course. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Juan, Through the use of real life situations you are showing your students both application and relevancy. This makes the content come alive and enables them to make immediate use of their newly acquired knowledge. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Mirela, Great way to start a course off and get everyone settled in. Your students know you are prepared and there to help them achieve success if they will put forth the effort. Thanks for sharing these methods with us. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Sandra, These are great ways to engage the students and make the course come alive. I know your students enjoy you sharing these methods with them. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Cheryl, Good points for instructors to remember and follow. By doing so they will set the tone for a very successful course. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Emily, So true and so important. Respect seems to be lacking on the part of many of the students I have today. They are me centered and feel entitled to a grade because they are paying money to go to school. I work very hard with these students because I know if they carry this attitude to the workplace they aren't going to be there very long. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
ARADHANA, I like the strategies you suggest for professional development. Observing and listening to other professionals can as you know greatly expand your instructional knowledge. Keep up the effort. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Ralph, Well said and right on the mark. This is the sign of a dedicated professional educator. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
