About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Ezra, Right on with your connection of student names and a key point that helps you remember their names right from the beginning of the course. Thanks for sharing this strategy with us. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Karyn, Students really like stories and examples, don't they? Sharing stories really validate the content that is being offered showing the students both relevancy and application. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Stacy, What are the key elements you see being needed for an effective presentation? Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Lauren, Thank you for these comments regarding "listening to" the student introductions. You are hearing a lot from them as they introduce themselves and share. There is a lot of understanding that can be taken from these sessions and applied to your instructional planning. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Daniel, I agree about how students value and respond to stories. Stories help the content to come alive and they validate that there is application and relevancy to what they are being taught. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Julie, All good strategies. Which of these do your students like to do the best or are they about equal in terms of appeal? Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Mirela, You are right about there not being a formula to motivate students. It is student by student effort. We just have to keep trying until we find what works for that specific student. We don't get them all but that doesn't keep us from trying. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Terizian, Yes, it is important to not jump to a conclusion early when meeting students for the first time. Just as you are making an impression on they they are on you so both entities need to be open to receive input from each other. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Renita, This is a great way to introduce everyone to each other while getting them settled into the course. This is fun allows them to laugh some and get focused on what is going to occur in the coming class sessions. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Mirela, Good points about a well prepared syllabus. Do you prepare the syllabus for your course or is one provided to you by your college? Gary Dr. Gary Meers
