About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Salvatore, Good way to tie their personal and professional goals to what is going to be covered in the course. This shows them the value of the course content. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Rene, Good point. This approach sets the boundaries and establishes that this is a professional course taught by a professional instructor so professional behavior is expected. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Arlinda, Good point about accountability in terms of showing accreditators what is covered in the syllabus. A clear record of course content and requirements. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Johnson, Can you expand on this statement some so I can understand it better? Thanks. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Lee, Well said and to the point. I like the true the 6 P's contain. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Scott, The more connection you can create between the course content, in this case accounting and their lives the greater the engagement will be. If you can come up with case studies or exercises that do this you will be able to help the students see value and application of what they are being taught. A competitive game or activity will help as well, anything to get beyond their negative thinking that "I am here only because I have to be.?. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Daniel, Great strategy for an online situation. You are making the sequence of protein synthesis graphic for the students. The more learning venues you can use the greater the content retention is going to be. Thanks for sharing it with us. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Claudette, I use the same approach with some of my content which is rather technical. Once they get to apply the content in case studies and role playing they really get excited about what they are learning. They start to see the connection between the content and their future success. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
James, I commend you for this balanced approach in providing student support. Your students are being provided with customized interventions and instruction based upon their situations. This is what reduces drop outs and increases student engagement. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Scott, I really like the way you laid out your definition of professionalism. By using this approach you are giving the students a model they can follow knowing their are receiving instruction from someone who cares about their success. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
