About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Don, Good plan and as you say one that never ends. We need to be life long learners for the benefit of our students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Seth, Graphic organizers are another valuable tool to help students visualize and organize their learning steps. They support what the students are working through in a way that is clear and easily understandable. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Kevin, In my research efforts I have developed an assessment for identifying the three dominant intelligences of an individual. This assessment is based upon a data base of 50,000 assessment takers. In analyzing this data I have found what you have stated. Personalities and personal intelligences play a big part of career selection. This is why it is easier to develop instructional deliveries based upon student learning preferences because for the most part the students have selected their careers based upon their personalities and they don't even know it. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Seth, You have a good understanding and approach to using the different processing channels of students. Your strategies will help them to move from the concrete to the abstract in a sequence that makes sense and is comfortable for the students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Heidi, Right you are. If they can relate to their colleagues and feel included they will be much more likely to complete the course and move closer to their career goal. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Sandra, Sad but true. Coming to class may be the only time in their lives where there is some stability. So the more support we can give them so they can continue their progress to their career goals the better. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Angela, I know it is contagious. So we need to be enthusiastic about teaching and passionate about our content. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Heidi, If you have warned the students you will be calling on them they will be prepared to answer. They won't feel singled out if you make this a common practice while conducting your discussion groups. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Lee, Good point and one we instructors need to remember as we start new classes off. Get the students settled in and looking forward to the upcoming course and in the process share complete and accurate information with them about the course requirements. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Lee, Good strategies. These types of supports help to keep the focused on the content and engaged in their career progress. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
