Activity

The 4 Cornerstones of Instruction- Biggest take away! Motivation is key! Figure out what motivates each one individually.

Variety, spontaneity, energy, all keep students engaged and active in their class participation. Learning is emotional, never really thought of this in this actual way! If in the "Slumps", REFOCUS!

Be fun, be creative, make them look forward to your class! There is a saying, "People will forget 80% of what you say, but they will never forget how you make them feel!"

It is so important to get to know your students, whether they are new adult learners, or out of high school for 20 years. Also knowing why are they here, what has their past experience shown them. Who are their support systems if they have any? Acknowlwdge frustrations, recommend a course of action, and refocus back on the classroom! Use Maslow's heirarchy of needs- very important!!!!

Be creative. Remember that every student learns differently. Combine styles to help engagment of students.

It is important to be prepared for the first day, set a good impression, make them feel comfort and answer their questions about your expectations for them. They want the basics on the first day! They will make their impression of you on that first day and they need to leave with info about not only the course, but about you, and how they are going to be successful!

The key is preparation, i.e. supplies, classroom, yourself, audiovisuals, etc. Be early, be organized, and show them you are human too! I like the analogies of Roadmap, blueprints, foundations, etc.

By setting the bar high for yourself, you are setting the bar high for your students. A blend of personality. soft skills and always being profesional will go a long way with your students. Also, we need to seek advice to help us as instructors to develop our own Professional Development plan, never stop learning! Lead by example!
