Activity

Hi James: This sounds great. Not too many participants in this forum have mentioned outdoor exercise (other than field trips). Humorously, I'll add "well, why is the lecture boring in the first place?". But seriously, I understand there are activities that are more interesting and enjoyable that make learning fun and memorable. Regards, Barry
Hi Denise: Programming this status update into the course is good. Even so, I think more frequent communication regarding performance and improvement is helpful. Also, sharing that information in a kind and courteous way, offering support and encouragement, and giving advide and suggestions will comfort student and perhaps they'll realize "this teacher cares about my learning and success". Regards, Barry

Hi Susan: I believe all teachers have a personality that is unique to them. One key is if a teacher is honest and sincere in their delivery, and relates to students naturally, it would seem unusual for students to take those sentiments as boring. Maybe not dynamic. But a natural version of oneself is probably going to be receved better than an artficial version of someone else. If instructors come prepared with true passion, enthusiasm, and excitement about the topic, students should receive that and more interesting and enjoyable. Also, interacting with students provides variety, and that always helps keep… >>>

Hi Susan: Yes, students should appreciate the time and effort teachers put into preparing bfor a class. Also, organized teachers save time by having all resources ready, getting to the point, staying on task, and having less wasted time and useable time for student questions or other discussion that adds to improved class performance. Regards, Barry
Hi Jennifer: These sound good. I think instructors use journals for many different reasons. Some are more reflective. Some are chronological records, observations, techniques, teaching strategies - whatever the teacher thinks works for them is useful. It seems not all teachers use or even like journalizing and that's okay. Those who do find them quite beneficial, especially over time. Regards, Barry
Hi Angelina: Caring and kindness (compassion and empathy) are important traits in the medical profession, and students can be taught the importance of, and some methods of awareness. I personally think when students possess these traits naturally, they'll make better medical professionals. These skills are great and if can be incorporated into the curriculum, all the better. For me, the goal is transfering to students our knowledge based on past educatin, training, work experience, and skillful expertise in order for the student to be successful in the work setting. Regards, Barry
Hi Brandi: Yeah, that "AHA" moment is great. Student learning objectives also refer to the "WHAT" of a course the student is supposed to learn. This is in contrast to course objectives that define the "HOW" those slo's will be met. Together, if achieved, the student will have mastered the material, or at least the information would have been presented. Regards, Barry
Hi Jennifer: Pretests can be fairly accurate in defining categories where students may need additional study or emphasis, so they can be a big help for teachers in tweaking their curriculm in order to better serve their students. Comparisson of first to last day performance can be an interesting analysis, ans also give some indication of the effectiveness of teacher delivery performance too (compared to past classes). Regards, Barry
Hi Arturo: Sure, for improvement to occur, the student first needs to be informed, then suggestions and advice can be given. And sometimes it takes a little bit of time for coorection to occur. So, the eariler and more frequent the teacher can meet with the student, the better chances the student will have to make needed improvements. Regards, Barry

Hi Sonny: There are probably hundreds of both proprietary and internet-based assessments one can seek out. Many of these have a particular focus or spin, less so a general "this is who you are". In reality, knowing ourselves can't really be determined by a test, at least with too much accruacy, because the subject of the test is performing the test! Anything you find (and there might be something useful out there for you) will be effective only to the degree you're willing to be honest with yourself and work on improving defined weaker areas. Many people can do this… >>>
