Role of instructor personality in delivery selection

Paul, I think it true that students like to be led (even though they might not know it). Usually, students don't get a choice in who there instructor is (unless they they just drop the class). A strong and effective leader is good at influencing people to do things, or perhaps follow their lead, so this is a great personality trait to have in order to lead the class to the desired student outcomes. Awarding extra credit

Karen, I love it when students want to or are willing to go the extra mile. It can really vitalize their enthusiasm and interest in learning the material. I just choose not to award credit for it. My grading is set up for 100% of of the assignded work. Now, a bonus question or perhaps dropping the lowest quiz score (when there are many quizes) is probably OK if any "adjustment" is to be made, because it won't impact the final grade that much (5 points out of 1000 perhaps). My opinion, others have their own policies about this and… >>>

Awarding extra credit

J, For me, I say if the meaningful experience is worthwhile, it ought to be a part of the regular course assignments to begin with. Being fair and objective with the grading process is just as important in school as it is in the work setting. There is no extra credit for missed due dates or bungled work projects at work. I think we set our students up for feeling entitled (more than they already are) when EC assignments are given, although I recognize there are alternate opinions. This is my bias. Barry Westling

Demarcus, True and valid point. How we assess can be varied hovever. I believe we can creatively make the evaluation process part of the instructional process. Also, the exam review following an examination can contribute to an informative, corrective, or instructional learning experience. Barry Westling

Kenny, Electronic gradebooks are great for recording and access by students. Yet, I believe 1-on-1 discussion can contribute to better outcomes. We can encourage, give advice, and convey we care at the same time. Barry Westling

John, You mention security - I like that. Students should be open to hearing from their instructor as a trusted friend who is giving accurate, realistic information about performance, and a plan for correction if applicable. Barry Westling

Russell, An old saying I learned (in the 70's) was "90% of my students should be performing at 90% or above". While that may be a bit altruistic, it does point out that, in part, a students performance is based on the teachers instruction. And to ensure we are hitting the mark, early on and frequent discussion about grade status can help both the teacher and student know where weaker areas may need more attention. Barry Westling

Timothy, I agree, working to improve grades is a good tactic, and the student must know where they stand for that to be effective. Barry Westling
