I had a student in a Cultural Diversity class -in other words - accuse me of being a racist -- not because of anything I said about race but because of that student's objections to my ponting out to her that she was almost always late, unprepared and disruptive...after an exchange in which she complained about having to "take another d***ed" quiz, she left the class, seeking the Administration to end my "racism." It was resolved in may favor but that's not as important as what else I could have done -- I had talked to her numerous times about… >>>

Is it more important to be a good listener and empathize or have a list/offer solutions to problems students are having outside of class? Or both? I try to do both but mostly I think listening may be more imporant...I may be the only person who is listening and they just want to vent. What do you think?

Many of my adult learners fear that their unfamiliarity with technology will be a barrier, not simply "feling disadvantaged compared to others" (the implied reference is to younger people, I suppose, who grew up with tech). I enourage them by saying that they can learn applications rather quickly, if they try, but experience -- perspective on life -- takes years and there is no fast way. What else can I add?
