About me

I am currently instructing the Industrial Wiring, Motors and Motor Controls course at McCann School of Business and Technology.

I have an AS in Electronics and a BS in Information Systems.

I have been employed as a Field Service Technician and Customer Service Engineer for over 25 years and have utilized most of the Industrial Maintenance information during that time.

Activity

This was a very accurate tool for understanding students and how to reach and retain them.  It helps if the instructors leave their ego behind and focus on the student experience.  It closely matches and models the career school students we have in our evening classes and the various methods to help them along their academic careers.

These are great courses for newer or veteran instructors.  Our student bodies are always changing.  This particular course touched on two relevant topics that I will use immediately, ELL learners and learning disabled.  Our courses are night schooled and a majority of our students are either ELL or have some learning impediment.  This course presents research based solutions that can be easily tested and implemented.  It will make me a better instructor and that will provide better student focus.

Very thorough course.  I've just started using pretestes for each class in order to enhance peer-to-peer interaction, student preparation and to maximize time on task for my labs.  I will utilize the course planning techniques and student feedback to enhance my courses.  I like the idea of smaller classroom learning units (~15-30 minutes) that can provide a milestone for the students and can easily be adapted depending on how the class is running, a plan "B".

Discussion Comment

@scmeaux : I absolutely try to, for industrial maintenance classes, it's a nice way to re-inforce safety principles, using proper techniques and following procedures without the students actually suffering the consequences.

The course was careful to cover all of the relevant topics required for compliance.  As a new instructor, I learned valuable information regarding interactions with students, parents, etc...  Overall a good course.
