Using both qualitative and quantitative analysis is best as it leads to a most comprehensive way to attain data. The use of pre and post tests are a great tool to see what students have learned.

Giving substantial feedback is important so students know where they stand in the course. (And offering individualized feedback conveys to the student that we are taking the time to closely read over their work.)

Using web-based tools (using more than just the discussion board)  is important as well as scaffolding. Treating our students with respect is important.

It is important to design an online class so it is consistent from week to week (with the same font, length of videos, etc.)

There are certain tricks to use to manage all the material in your class. Conflict can ensue in an online class and it is the role of the instructor to look for signs of conflict and to reduce it.

Keeping posts informal and to the point is important. The use of emoticons can be helpful to create a nice tone.

I learned the importance of instructor's presence and how to project it via different means. "Knowing" who are students are and where they are coming from is a great first step.

I learned the value in the support infrastructure and the importance of learning the online platform before the start date.
