In this module, I learned how rubrics can be used to assess communication in an online course.  Rubrics provide clear expectations for students and help instructors evaluate participation consistently and fairly.  I play to apply what I learned by using rubrics to assess discussion board participation, focusing on areas such as timeliness, relevance, quality of writing, and contribution to the discussion.

In this module, I learned the importance of helping students communicate professionally and respectfully in an online learning environment. Clear expectation and communication guidelines can promote meaningful interactions and reduce misunderstandings.  I plan to apply what I learned by encouraging respectful communication and providing students with clear expectations for participation in discussions, emails, and other course activities.

In this module, I learned the importance of using technology tools to communicate effectively with students in an online environment.  I plan to apply what I learned by continuing to use Canvas announcements, Zoom meetings, and Remind messages to keep students informed and engaged.  Effective communication helps create a more supportive learning experience and promotes student success.

In this module, I learned that transferring course content to an online environment involves more than simply uploading lecture notes and assignments.  Course material should be organized, accessible, and designed to help students engage with the content in a meaningful way.

As an online mathematics instructor, I plan to apply this by continuing to organize course materials in Canvas, provide clear instructions, and use tools such as ALEKS and Zoom to support student learning.  My goal is to create an online learning environment that is easy to navigate and helps students succeed.

In this module, I learned about the "Guide on the Side" approach, where the instructor serves as a facilitator rather than simply delivering information.  This approach encourages students to take a more active role in their learning by exploring concepts, solving problems, and engaging with course materials.

As an online mathematics instructor, I plan to apply this approach by continuing to provide guidance, resources, and support while encouraging students to work through problems independently and develop confidence in their mathematical skills.  This can help create a more engaging and student-centered learning environment.

In this module, I learned more about the differences between synchronous and asynchronous learning.  Synchronous learning allows students and instructors to interact in real time through tools such as Zoom, while asynchronous learning gives students the flexibility to complete coursework on their own schedule.

As an online mathematics instructor, I see the value in both approaches.  I plan to continue using asynchronous tools such as Canvas, ALEKS, and recorded videos to provide students with flexibility and opportunities to learn at their own pace.  At the same time, I will continue offering synchronous Zoom sessions where students can ask questions and… >>>

In this module, I learned about several technology tools that can be used to improve communication, organization, and student engagement.  I was reminded that technology is most effective when it is used to support learning and make information more accessible to students.

As an online mathematics instructor, I plan to apply what I learned by continuing to use technology tools such as Canvas, ALEKS, Zoom, and other online resources to communicate with students and support their learning.  I look forward to exploring additional tools that can help create a more engaging and effective learning experience.

One thing I took away from this module is the importance of both social and motivational engagement in online courses. Many students are balancing work, school, and family responsibilities, so things like clear instructions, reminders, and instructor participation can help keep them engaged. Moving forward, I would like to improve how certain assignments are explained by possibly including examples or brief clarifications, while also continuing to participate in discussions and connect my own experiences to students’ posts to help maintain a sense of community in the course.

Understanding models such as True Colors (TC) helps instructors identify how different personalities influence communication, motivation, and learning preferences.  No single teaching style works for all students, so being aware of these differences allows instructors to design instruction that is both inclusive and supportive of diverse learners.

I have learned that effective instructors respect their students, create a supportive learning community, and remain flexible in their teaching approach.
