About me

My name is Christina Dyer and it is a pleasure to “virtually” meet all of you! :)

I was born and raised in Miami, FL but recently packed up and moved across the country to Southern California to expand a family tutoring business and to also continue pursuing my passion for education. I received a BS and a MS in Hospitality & Tourism Management at Florida International University.

I worked in the Hospitality industry for many years as an Event Director in a Miami hotel. I began teaching Hospitality and Tourism courses a few years ago and have been hooked ever since. I thoroughly enjoy having the ability to teach students the many elements of this exciting industry and to provide guidance in understanding the skills needed to strive in the fast pace environment.

I have also spent many years dedicated to a family tutoring company. Our company provides free tutoring to low income, low achieving students who are struggling to stay in school due to poor learning skills. It has been extremely rewarding having the ability to provide educational help to students in need and watching them flourish into more confident individuals, both academically and personally.

I am a huge sports lover and a dedicated Miami fan (Go Heat, Dolphins and Marlins!) Growing up, sports were always a big enjoyment in my family, which led me to a softball scholarship at Florida International University.  My other hobbies include cooking, reading, working out, and enjoying beautiful California sunsets on the beach.

This was an excellent course. I will definitely be applying what I have learned into my everyday life. It was very nice to have a refresher and analyze how I need to better time manage my time. Thanks for a great course!

I have learned from experience that when stress isn’t contributing to my greater emotional and physical health, it’s time to find healthier ones. There are many healthy ways to manage and cope with stress, but they all require change. You can either change the situation or change your reaction. When deciding which option to choose, I find it helpful to think of the four A’s: avoid, alter, adapt, or accept. Mainly, I try to focus on what makes me feel calm and in control.

When I become overwhelmed and stressed my eating and sleeping habits tend to take a backseat. I find that when I am overwhelmed with tasks on my plate, eating a healthy meal and taking a short exercise break will re-energize my mind and calm my nerves down to focus on the task at hand.

Grading definitely takes up most of my time. I think it's critical to make sure that each student is thoroughly comprehending the course material so I spend time (sometimes too much) analyzing assignments and providing feedback. I have found that there are some great programs out there that help with cutting time when grading. One program is Grade Assist. It allows you to create suggestion boxes to add to the corrections based on the given assignment. Rather than having to type out the same correction multiple times, the comment is saved to just click and add immediately.

Sometimes I feel as though I may not manage my time effectively because I take on too many tasks to please or help others. I then find myself putting my important tasks aside to give time to something that should be dealt with at later time. I have a fairly large and very close family, and sometimes I feel as though I go out of my way to assist with their tasks, which then causes stress for me later when I need to complete my own tasks. My important tasks on my list then become urgent and I feel rushed… >>>
