I would definitely agree. Students are so computer savvy these days I think they enjoy it when they are given an assignment to research a topic. It is an opportunity to use their computer skills.

Adults come in all sorts of levels of learning. We have some that are right out of high school and others that have been out of school for a while. Some receive help from one another and can bring different learning and studying strategies to the classroom.

Make sure you talk about the project from day one and really build it up to be a fun and exciting thing to work on . You could even make it a group project or just 2 people together. That would relieve some of the stress of having to do it alone if they had a partner or partners to help. I think like all of us, some students just get burn out about half way thru and it is easy to lose a few at that time. What ever the reason be (work, weather, child care issues) etc.

Majority of our core classes are labs so class participation to make the grade is a must. When students miss too much lab to make them up we consult with the student about repeating the class. The skills taught in labs must be mastered and majority of the time the student is already thinking that they need to repeat the class just to feel confident in what they need to know. They want to feel good about what they are learning and know that they know that they know without a shadow of a doubt. We just had this happen… >>>

Thank you I would just like to add that majority of our extern sites continue to take our students and have stopped taking students from other schools. Some have hired more than one assistant.
