Not just for the student, but for the whole campus system. From housing to instruction to accounting, everyone seems to have more stress in dealing with someone without total committment.
Not all instructors interact with new students, however it is equally important for all instructors to keep the same consistant message of all aspects of the orientation messages.

Questions can lead student to the correct understanding of the concept by making them think. One of the best methods is to ask questions about the topic but in a different context. This will check the student's ability to apply what they have learned to a situation that may have slight variences.
I seem to get good results if i read the power point slide, then draw a pictoral representation on the board and follow it up with a hands on activity. Whether I do a demo or the students are performing hands on seems to get about the same results.

I think as an instructor we have the ability to steer student commitment to a great extent. Relating the course material to the end result which is to become proficient in a task out in the field is major. In addition I believe we have the responsibility of working with students to show them that they can achieve this goal, and prove to them that they have the ability to do so.
When a student's attitude toward learning diminishes, early detection is important in heading off the student's reactive decisions which may be hap-hazzard under the mounting realization that things are deteriorating.
We are an adult learning school, and as such need to recognize that there are no "Kids" at our campuses. The use of the term, even when students aren't present, sets up the wrong attitude. Respect is different than becomming a student's buddy, it is the act of respecting and treating each student as an equal adult.

Announce the topic in an informal manor, then illustrate the need for the knowledge, or the "why". Then begin to clearly explain the topic and answer the questions that students begin to have. "Buy in" and the desire to learn dramatically increase if the student knows where the topic is going and how it applies or will apply to them.
When i allow the students to teach me, they have more confidence, are more positive in attitude, and i learn something which makes me better as an instructor.
Sometimes just pointing out the reasons they made the decision to come to UTI and receive an education in their career choice brings out their best efforts. Keep it all positive.
