I learned how safety and regulations for online learning have evolved, how schools have adapted to these changes, and the security measures they have implemented. I found it interesting that even if a student opts out, they still cannot remain anonymous in their online class.

This part of the module taught me what happens to records when a school changes ownership, when FERPA does and does not apply, and how students can get their records if they cannot come in person. It also explained how security measures protect student records. This knowledge will help me do my job better and keep student information safe.

Throughout this module, I learned about recordkeeping requirements, the general rules for releasing student records, and how FERPA applies to third parties. I will use this knowledge to ensure I follow FERPA guidelines and protect students’ private information.

From this module, I learned the key elements of FERPA, including what information is protected under the law and what is not. I will apply FERPA in my daily work at ECPI to help ensure and protect students’ privacy.

A key takeaway is that leadership sets the example. When leaders demonstrate ethical behavior and follow the same standards as everyone else, employees are more likely to respect and follow compliance rules.

It is important to always do the right thing to prevent future problems. Having integrity helps avoid noncompliance, which can negatively affect all students in different ways.

I learned that substantial misrepresentation can involve accreditation, facilities and equipment, transfer of credits, and instructor qualifications. I also learned that speaking negatively about other schools is unprofessional and goes against our code of ethics.

The biggest harm caused by misrepresentation is the loss of trust. When students are misled, it can hurt their goals, cause stress, and damage the school’s reputation. Once trust is lost, it is very hard to rebuild and can have lasting effects on both students and the institution.

Clear catalogs, enrollment agreements, and open communication help ensure transparency so students can make informed decisions and understand their responsibilities.

I learned that regulatory oversight helps make sure schools follow the rules, protect students, and maintain quality. Regulators and accrediting agencies work together to ensure schools act ethically and meet required standards.
